THE TOWN OF COLOMA
I was told there’s gold in this River. Well, I’m about to take a dip and find out.
Hello, “Own It” magazine subscribers. Barry S Ricoma here. Your friendly neighborhood Adventurer. Coming at you with another exciting travel destination by way of Folsom, California.
Today’s destination brings us to The Marshall Gold Discovery Historical Park. The park is named after James W, Marshall who discovered gold here in 1848. Fun Fact: Marshall’s discovery of gold in the American river is what sparked the California Gold Rush bringing prospectors from all over the world seeking fortune and a better life.

Not only is this area steeped in history pertaining to Marshall and his gold expeditions but it also showcases the determination and fortitude of freed slaves trying to live and become successful in society during that time. One such family that rose to prominence was the Monroe family. A keynote place of interest that I enjoyed was the Monroe house.

Here we get to experience how life was for this black family as they work to build a life, a quite abundant one I might add for themselves and future generations that come after.

As described by the curator: “She cooked for the miners, did the laundry for the miners. She started buying the land. They started planting an orchard,, they had a big Orchard. It took her 20 years, $700 to get her son here. Finally got her son here with his family. So probably it’s just a grandson. Andrew worked the fields, sold the fruits and vegetables to Sacramento and Placerville. Very good friends with James Marshall and when he passed away, they helped bury him. Pearly worked for the California library, as a custodian when he retired, he lived here.”

The other place I enjoyed visiting was the blacksmith being a person that likes to work with his hands I found it very intriguing and fun to watch as the blacksmith was forging and pounding on the Anvil The blacksmith shop was built by pearly Monroe around 1928.
It was one of the central points of Coloma during the gold rush. It was an essential part of the community for making repairs and manufacturing everything that was made from wrought-iron.

Much like any other historical town that you may visit, you have your historical buildings and sites with
prominent people of the town during that era and it was fun to watch and look around.
What really piqued my interest was the fact that we could pan for gold. For a small fee you can pan for
gold for about an hour. It was pretty fun, and I managed to find a couple flakes.

As with my debut article in my last article. I want to take a moment to showcase a piece of gear that I use when I travel. This issues’ gear spotlight is focused on my love of music. Whether it be hiking, sightseeing, or simply working out at the gym. I never leave home without my PeryTong Bluetooth headband!! If you’re like me and have issues with earbuds fitting properly or are tired of using bulky headphones then this headband is for you! This item is by far my best purchase of 2023 (so far).
