Greetings Freedom Riders!
As Thanksgiving comes to a close and Christmas rapidly approaches, it is a time for reflection and gratitude, and I find myself thankful for the friendships, experiences, and the beautiful world around us. Recapping our recent journey along the breathtaking California-Oregon coast, where every moment invited us to appreciate the wonders of nature and the joy of togetherness.

Our journey began with stunning scenic ocean views along the California-Oregon coast, where every turn reveals the rugged beauty of the Pacific. The drive captivates us with breathtaking vistas, historical landmarks, and natural wonders that set the tone for our Thanksgiving road trip.
Our first stop is Pelican Beach, known for its tranquil atmosphere and the sight of pelicans gliding above the water. Historically, this beach served as a significant gathering place for Native American tribes, who relied on the coastal resources for sustenance.
Next, we arrive at Harris Beach, famous for its picturesque rock formations and tide pools. This area is rich in maritime history, being home to shipwrecks that were a common occurrence along this treacherous stretch of coastline in the 19th century.
Continuing along our journey, we explore Whalehead Beach, a stunning location that provides breathtaking views and is popular for whale migration sightings during the winter months. This beach has become a favored spot for birdwatchers hoping to see migratory species in action.

At Natural Bridges, we marvel at the impressive rock arches carved by the relentless waves. These natural formations have been a guiding landmark for sailors and served as one of the region’s notable geological features.
Pistol River, with its charming scenery, evokes the area’s history of early Native American settlements. The river has been a vital resource for tribes, contributing to trade and sustenance for centuries.
Next, we visit Humbug Mountain State Park, celebrated for its stunning coastal trails and lush forests. Historically, this area was protected to conserve the old-growth forests that have stood for hundreds of years, making it an essential part of the region’s ecosystem.

With the beauty and history of these coastal locations behind us, we continue on our journey to our first major stop: Whiskeytown Lake.
First Stop: Whiskeytown Lake
Located in Northern California’s Shasta County, Whiskeytown Lake is surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is rich in history. Formed in the 1960s by the construction of the Whiskeytown Dam for purposes of hydroelectric power and flood control, this beautiful reservoir has become a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

Whiskeytown Lake serves as a gateway to tales from the Gold Rush era. The nearby town of Whiskeytown thrived in the mid-1800s and was named after the whiskey trade that flourished during that time. While the town eventually faded from existence, its legacy remains, with the old town site still submerged beneath the lake’s waters.
As we approach, the vibrant autumn colors reflect beautifully on the lake’s surface, providing a stunning backdrop for pictures and peaceful contemplation. Jolene and I take time to explore the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, where hiking trails meander through beautiful landscapes adorned with oak trees and wildflowers. We learn about the area’s rich biodiversity, including deer, bald eagles, and a variety of bird species.
For those interested in history, remnants of old gold mining operations nearby add a charming vintage note to our adventure. We visit the visitor center, where engaging exhibits tell stories of early miners and the natural history of the region, deepening our appreciation for the land we are exploring.

As we prepare to depart the serene shores of Whiskeytown Lake, the sun begins to set, casting an orange and pink glow across the sky. We gather around a cozy campfire, sharing stories and reminiscing about the path that led us here. It’s a moment of gratitude as we eagerly anticipate the adventures that still await us on this road trip.
Next Stop: Tillamook Creamery

With Whiskeytown Lake behind us, we hit the road, excited to journey toward the Tillamook Creamery in Oregon. Located just off the scenic Oregon Coast, the creamery is renowned for its exceptional cheeses and ice creams, and we look forward to indulging in a delicious break during our travels.

Upon arrival at Tillamook, we are welcomed by an inviting atmosphere and the delightful aroma of freshly made dairy products. The campus features a fascinating visitor’s center that offers guided tours, allowing us to learn about the cheese-making process while witnessing it firsthand. It’s amazing to see the care and craftsmanship that goes into producing their popular cheeses.
After touring the facility, it’s time for the highlight of our visit: sampling! With a platter of various cheeses and their creamy ice cream, we dive into a world of flavors. Each bite showcases the quality of their ingredients and the farmers’ dedication who supply them, making it a delightful experience. We share favorites, comparing the sharpness of aged cheddar to the smoothness of their popular Tillamook Vanilla Bean ice cream.

As we finish our tastings, Jolene and I leave with our favorite cheeses for Thanksgiving and a newfound appreciation for this iconic creamery. The visit is a sweet reminder of the simple joys in life—good food, good company, and the beauty of taking time to savor the moment.
Next Stop: Jolene’s Family Home for Thanksgiving
With our bellies satisfied, we continue our journey to Jolene’s family home, where we will celebrate Thanksgiving together. Arriving at her family’s warm and welcoming house feels like stepping into a joyful scene from a holiday movie. The enticing aroma of a Thanksgiving feast fills the air, and family members greet us with open arms, embodying the spirit of togetherness that this season represents.

As we gather around the table, I am filled with gratitude for being included in their family traditions. Jolene’s family shares stories and laughter, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes everyone feel at home. Each dish carries its own story, from the perfectly roasted turkey to the cherished cranberry sauce passed down through generations. I find myself savoring every bite and cherishing the rich history behind each family recipe.
Being part of this gathering reminds me of the importance of connection and the joy of spending time with loved ones. Jolene’s family is filled with warmth, and I feel privileged to share in their celebrations. This experience is not just about the meal itself; it’s about the love and memories created around the dining table.
As we give thanks for various blessings, I reflect on my journey and the moments that have led me here. The road trip with Jolene, the scenic wonders of Whiskeytown Lake, the delightful cheese tastings at Tillamook, and now this heartfelt Thanksgiving feast weave together to create a tapestry of unforgettable experiences.
Final Stop: Shasta Lake Caverns
After a memorable Thanksgiving, it’s time for one last adventure before we return to Nevada. We head to the Shasta Lake Caverns, a stunning natural attraction just a short drive from the lake. Discovered in the 1870s, these caverns exemplify the geological wonders of the region, having formed over millions of years through natural processes.
As we arrive, we are greeted by expert guides who share intriguing stories about the caverns’ formation and the unique mineral formations we are about to explore. The tour begins as we descend into the cool, dimly lit caves, where we marvel at the impressive stalactites and stalagmites created through time.

One fascinating fact we learn is that the limestone deposits in this area date back roughly 350 million years, offering a glimpse into a world long before humans walked the earth. Each turn reveals stunning rock formations and the natural beauty that has attracted explorers and adventurers for generations.
As we exit the caverns, I feel a sense of wonderment and gratitude for the chance to experience such a special place. The visit reminds me of the importance of appreciating nature’s beauty and the stories it holds.

With our adventure at Shasta Lake Caverns coming to a close, we take a moment to reflect on our journey. The memories made during this road trip—from the scenic shores of Whiskeytown Lake to the feeling of belonging at Jolene’s Thanksgiving gathering—have left a lasting impression.
Looking Back and Ahead

As we prepare to return to Nevada, I carry with me the warmth of friendship, the joy of family connections, and the beauty of the incredible places we’ve explored together. This road trip may be ending, but the experiences and memories will last a lifetime. Stay tuned for future adventures as Jolene and I continue to explore the wonders of the world around us!
