DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: I’m often asked why I decided to move to the Dominican Republic. The answer was simple for me—because it was an option, and I took it. When did you first realize that life was meant to be lived beyond the ordinary—and how did that realization change everything for you?
DR. BARRY S. RICOMA: For me, it was when I moved to Germany as a soldier. It was the first time I had left home to live on my own. Experiencing independence on a whole new level was both challenging and liberating. Additionally, immersing myself in a different culture and lifestyle exposed me to new perspectives and enriched my understanding of the world. This realization showed me that life is filled with vast opportunities beyond the familiar, and it inspired me to embrace new experiences and challenges with an open mind and heart.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Leisure isn’t just luxury—it’s a lifestyle. What daily rituals or habits help you stay grounded while still living lavishly?
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Living a life of luxury while staying grounded is important to me, and here’s how I make it happen:
- Health and fitness through weight training: I maintain my physical health and mental well-being by incorporating weight training into my routine. It keeps me focused and energized, which is essential for leading a balanced and fulfilling life.
- Connecting with nature: I make it a point to get out into nature, whether hiking or camping. Being outdoors helps me unplug and recharge, reducing stress and promoting mindfulness. It’s my way of staying connected to the world around me.
- Wind therapy with “DA Scooter”: On my motorcycle, I experience a unique sense of freedom and exhilaration. Hitting the road clears my mind and offers a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.
These daily habits allow me to enjoy the best of both worlds—a luxurious lifestyle that embraces personal well-being and the simple pleasures of life.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: You’ve curated a life many dream of—what sacrifices, challenges, and mindset shifts did it take to build this version of yourself?
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: As proud as I am of who I am today, I have to acknowledge that this version of me was born from pain and loss. Facing the harsh reality that the sacrifices I made—believing they were for the good of the household—weren’t enough for my spouse to stay in our marriage was incredibly painful. That realization led to the challenge of starting over at 48 years old, with a new career, a new location, and essentially a whole new life—alone. It required a significant mindset shift, embracing the belief that I am enough and deserving of love in all its forms. I took a leap of faith to experience new adventures and opportunities, even when faced with uncertainty about the destination or outcome. This journey involved sacrifice and overcoming challenges, but it has ultimately led me to a life filled with growth, resilience, and self-discovery.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: As someone who has experienced both mainland living and life abroad, how does the sense of community differ, and what aspects of other cultures have resonated most deeply with you? Whether it’s travel, food, fashion, or wellness—what’s one indulgence you’ll never apologize for, and why?
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Experiencing both mainland living and life abroad has truly opened my eyes to the diverse sense of community around the world. Many cultures abroad tend to be more family- and community-focused compared to the social distance that has become more common in the U.S. over the past few decades. It’s fascinating to see each culture flourish while still maintaining a strong community presence within close proximity to its borders. For instance, when I lived in Germany, I could easily take a weekend trip and experience four different countries and cultures. This proximity offers a rich tapestry of experiences that contrasts with the U.S., where a weekend trip might still keep you within the same cultural setting. One indulgence I’ll never apologize for is travel. It allows me to immerse myself in new cultures, savor diverse cuisines, appreciate unique fashions, and embrace different wellness practices. Travel broadens my perspective and enriches my life in ways nothing else can.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Share with us some of your favorite hidden gems and local hotspots around the world—from secluded beaches to off-the-beaten-path hiking trails—that capture the true essence of the islands. Tell us about a place, experience, or retreat that completely transformed your perspective on what it means to truly live well.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Certainly! One of my all-time favorite adventures was in August 2024, when I embarked on a 4,000-mile journey with my nephew, Ethan, to Sturgis, South Dakota, for the 84th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. It was our first time experiencing this legendary event, and we were eager for an authentic and epic adventure. Staying true to my motto, “Two-Wheeled Freedom, Riding Towards Adventure,” we set off down the open highways on our motorcycles. The journey was as memorable as the destination, taking us through breathtaking landscapes such as Yosemite National Park and the Black Hills near Mount Rushmore. Along the way, we saw buffalo roaming freely, which added an awe-inspiring element to our trip. This experience completely transformed my perspective on what it means to truly live well. It reaffirmed that true freedom lies in the journey and the adventures we choose to pursue—discovering hidden gems and creating lasting memories with loved ones.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: How do you balance ambition and achievement with slowing down and savoring life’s luxurious moments? Describe a perfect day in your favorite destination—from sunrise to sunset.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Balancing ambition with savoring life’s luxurious moments is about consciously prioritizing rest and rejuvenation. The work will always be there, but burnout serves no one. Although I’ve never taken a real vacation or honeymoon, I often dream of a perfect day on a secluded tropical island with my special person. We would begin with a sunrise walk along the beach, followed by snorkeling or kayaking. Lunch would be fresh local seafood, and the afternoon would be spent relaxing in a hammock under palm trees. As the sun sets, we’d enjoy a romantic dinner on the beach and end the night stargazing—simply being present in peaceful, shared moments.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: We often hear about success, but what’s a lesser-known moment of struggle or self-doubt that shaped your journey? How has traveling abroad inspired you to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle?
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Navigating self-doubt is a continuous journey for me, especially as I transition into public speaking. I persevere by holding onto my faith that God is guiding me. Traveling abroad has also opened my eyes to the importance of preserving our planet’s natural beauty. While I may not have made a massive impact yet, I focus on being a good steward—cleaning up after myself and respecting every environment I visit.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Living well often means leading well. In what ways are you inspiring others to embrace a lifestyle of purpose and pleasure?
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: I share videos of my motorcycle adventures on social media and contribute travel articles to OWNIT Magazine. While I create primarily for my own enjoyment, I’m grateful that my journey inspires others to step outside their comfort zones and explore the world with open hearts and minds.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: From jet-setting to journaling—what does a perfect day look like in your world?
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: A perfect day balances adventure and comfort. While I love traveling, there truly is no place like home—my fuzzy slippers, familiar surroundings, and being with my special person. Traveling has given me unforgettable moments, from iconic landmarks to spontaneous local experiences. These journeys deepen my appreciation for both the vastness of the world and the sanctuary of home.
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: What message would you give to someone stuck in the routine of life, yearning for more but unsure where to begin?
DR. MARISSA L. BLOEDOORN: Start small and take the first step. Go outside—beyond your porch—even if it’s just to the end of your street. Every small venture can open your eyes to new possibilities. Start where you are, with what you have, and let curiosity guide you. Every journey begins with a single step, and that step can lead to big changes.
